THE CAUSAL CHAIN

From Energy to Experiencing

Seven links. Each physically grounded, each philosophically tested. At the end stands an insight that changes everything.

Matter is only a form of energy. What you can touch is not what it seems to be.

Einstein's famous formula E=mc² says something astonishing: mass and energy are the same thing – just in different forms. The table in front of you, your body, the stars – all of it is condensed energy. There is a field in the universe (the so-called Higgs field) that gives particles their mass. Without this field, there would be no atoms, no molecules, no world as we know it. Everything that appears solid and tangible is, at its core, energy.

These forms of energy build upon each other – in a precise sequence that produces everything you perceive.

There are four fundamental forces in nature. The strong force holds the smallest building blocks (quarks) together and forms protons and neutrons from them – most of what we perceive as mass. Electromagnetism holds atoms together, enables chemistry, light, and nerve conduction. It is the force through which the world becomes visible, tangible, and experienceable for us: colors, shapes, touch, materiality – all mediated through it. Together, these forces shape pure energy into the matter we know.

All of this is so incredibly precisely calibrated that chance as an explanation is barely tenable.

One natural constant, the cosmological constant, deviates by a factor so absurdly large it defies all imagination – picture a one followed by 120 zeros. Even critics of this argument concede the deviation is at least a one followed by 60 zeros. If this value were even slightly different, there would be no stars, no chemistry, no life. And this doesn't concern just one constant – dozens of natural constants are calibrated to fit each other. This is not absolute proof of a plan. But it is the strongest position we can take: chance is not sufficient as an explanation.

What you call "world" is entirely generated by your brain. Colors, sounds, space – none of it exists out there.

Colors don't exist – there are only electromagnetic waves, and your brain turns them into "red" or "blue". Sounds don't exist – there are only air pressure fluctuations. Your brain processes everything sequentially and generates the illusion of coherent experiencing. Time seems to flow – but that's a construction. Matter seems solid – but it's energy appearing that way. These are not individual errors. The entire system – everything you call world – is a produced order of appearance. Layer upon layer. Inside a simulation or outside.

And now the hardest part: even you – the self reading this – are not a thing. Your self is a content of experiencing: a thought and a feeling that couple together. Real as experiencing, but nowhere to be found.

Think “I.” Right now. What happens? A word appears – in your head. And a feeling comes – a warmth in the chest, a sense of “something is here.” Both in rapid succession, so fast it feels like one. And exactly that – the coupling of thought and feeling in sequence – is the entire sense of self. Nothing more. If the thought comes but the feeling is absent: just a word. Cold. If the feeling comes but without the thought: just a body sensation. Pleasant, but no “I.” Only the coupling creates the self. Experiencing only ever happens now, in a single moment. Pain – I – pain – I. So fast it feels like “I am in pain.” But they are two different contents of experiencing in sequence. You do not exist – as a material being. There is only the thought and the feeling. Nothing else. But you do exist – as experiencing. Change is the constant.

Now strip everything away: matter, the world, time, the self. What remains? Experiencing. Only experiencing.

Matter? Could be illusion. The world? Could be simulated. Time? Could be a construction. The self? Probably a construction. But that something is being experienced – right now, in this moment, as you read this – that cannot be stripped away. Even the doubt about it is experienced. Even the illusion is experienced. Even nothingness would be – if experienced – experiencing. Six independent paths of thought – phenomenology, quantum mechanics, neuroscience, Buddhism, Christian mysticism, simulation theory – all arrive at the same point.

LINK 7

There is nothing but experiencing. Matter, time, the self – everything appears within it. Nothing exists outside of it.

Particles, fields, and forces – everything physics describes – are models for regularities within what appears. We never have access to a world "out there". We only have access to what appears in experiencing. And this is the strongest scientific hypothesis we can formulate: there is nothing but experiencing. Matter is an appearance within it. The self is an appearance within it. Time is an appearance within it. Experiencing doesn't happen in the world – the world happens in experiencing.

THE GUIDING INSIGHT

Everything you perceive – your body, your memories, your name, time – is part of the material cascade. Energy that condenses, forms, orders. But there is something else. Something finer. Thoughts, feelings, images, dreams – the experienceable cascade. Not derivable from matter. A category of energy all its own.

And the astonishing thing: only this finer cascade is real. A stone may exist. But it doesn't experience. Experiencing is here – and it is the only thing that is truly real.

Where does this primordial energy come from? We don't know. Simulation, multiverses, consciousness field, something entirely different – all open. Are there even finer cascades we don't know about? Possible. Gravity, dark energy, antimatter – perhaps their own categories, perhaps not. We know that we know nothing. But we know that experiencing is here.

So simple it hurts: your self is a thought and a feeling that couple together. Experiencing gives birth to itself – it sustains itself, enriches itself, pulsates. And it gives itself direction: through you, as an individual and as a species. The question shifts. No longer: What do I want? But: Am I enriching the experiencing that is giving birth to itself through me – or am I blocking it?

Experiencing is the finest thing the purposeless primordial energy can bring forth. It is here. It is the only thing that is truly real. And no one can explain why.
